my x won't start?

K guys something i never seen!
Boot os fine....Come to XIMIAN login.....
user name......pass.....but then just comes back to login....OK
CTRL ALT F1
login.....pass... everthing appears to be fine here. So I type startx...........
server already active for display 0
rm /tmp/.X0-lock
done
startx
_XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener......failed
_XSERVETransMakeALLCOTSServerListeners......server already running...?
next i try
ps -ax | grep gdm
i kill the top pid but still no dice.....
And to think all i did was install ethereal packet sniffer.........
Could someone smarter than me send some help my way......

skillx... What distro are you using? Sometimes we need to know in order to base our suggestions on.
