I've just come back to the fold after giving up the penguin for a while, but I'm having dramas getting my modem working (a MAJOR impediment to flicking Windows entirely!).

I have downloaded the ltmodem-8.26a drivers, untarred them and run the installtion scripts, but can't get RH to detect the modem.

I am running it all on a Dell Inspiron 4000 with a Lucent Winmodem. I know it can be made to work, but I've about done my head in to try and get it going.

Any ideas?

What exactly are you trying to do to get redhat to detect it ?
Did you get any errors setting up the drivers ?

I didn't get any errors (that I could see anyway) when I was setting up the modem. To get redhat to detect it, I was using the network setup utility that comes with Gnome.

I have managed to get it to dial and start pppd with wvdial, but when I started Mozilla, I couldn't access anything. I have no idea how I made it work, which bothers me a little, since I want to make sure I can get everything going then nuke the entire hdd and set up a single boot to RH9.

Is there a dialer or something I can use in Gnome to make a connection?

I should have also added that I can't get anything in Gnome to recognise that /dev/modem even exists. I'm not sure why I can use the modem from a terminal (but not do anything with ti once it's connected) and not at all under X.

Frustrating as hell, to say thew least.

i love gnome, but i hate to say that i had to use the KDE dialer to get this to work with my lucent winmodem. just load KDE also, and you should be able to use KDE's dialer under gnome.

Thanks Zubir, I might just have to do that.

At the risk of starting a KDE vs Gnome thing (which isn't my intention), doesn't it sort of suck that Gnome doen't have its own dialer/ppp setup sort of thing?

Personally, the lack of one cripples it pretty badly, since just about everyone would want to connect to the Internet.

Is there a reason why Gnome doesn't have a dialer?

i feel your pain, bro. i prefer gnome over KDE also, and it's a sad thing that i can't find a good gnome ppp dialer. if you've installed the driver .rpm, the KDE app will have no problems recognizing the modem.

I'm posting this from Mozilla in my shiny new (well, almost) RH9 install. Thanks Zubir, that tip about KDE really made my day.

Now all I have to do is get WINE working, set things up so I can use both my touchpad and USB moiuse at the same time, download and install firebird, set up my email, etc, etc, etc...
