Any ideas? I know Redhat and Mandrake have betas with new stuff on them, but which will be first?

I have Slack on my machine, but I'm getting a 60gb hdd soon and I'm trying to decide which distro to go with. I'd like to get one that has the latest and great software on it. I sure wish a new version of Slack would come out soon - I'd like to stick with it. I am capable of installing the software by myself, but it's a pain in the arse to download all that through 56k.

doesn't Suse's latest have all these?

SuSE 7.1 has KDE 2.0.1. Two out of three isn't bad.

I think Libranet has all of the above.

<edit>By the way, I *think* a new version of slack is supposed to be out arround May or so, though I could be wrong.</edit>

Pffft...two words: "apt-get upgrade". I downloaded the Debian install a good month ago and I still get the most current up-to-date, by-the-minute, bleeding-edge software by typing those two little words :) The great thing is that you can make it as cutting-edge and unstable and buggy, or as tried-and-tested and stable and dated as you'd like it to be :)

 Debian

or  Debian-based

Yay for Tyr-7BE. I already have all of those, packaged and ready to be managed by an advanced package tool. Debian

You could always use autoslack and upgrade everything to the latest stuff.

I think the next version of slackware is staying with kernel 2.2.19. The 2.4 series still has issues.

I think your better off sticking with Slackware. If just want a new feature just download it. I'm running Slackware 7.1 at home and at work and I have no problem with it or the new 2.4.3 kernel. Slackware rocks.

Libranet 1.9.0 already has them all. I believe that it was released a couple of weeks ago.

Try it, it's a great distro.

Isn't the answer Linux From Scratch, by default?

Or is LFS not considered a proper "distro"?

Agreed, it is pretty nice. Though being the pathetically anal person that I am, I was a little upset that I couldn't select individual packages to install, though you can always remove packages after the system is installed.

Heck I have at least all that with MDK 7.2. About the only reason I am considering the upgrade to 8, is for GNOME 1.4.

Libranet looks interesting. I think I may try it. They charge you $15 to download their latest and great, but I have no problem with that. I hope they send me my user name and password immediately after I send my credit card info, however. I'd hate to have to wait. Anyone know?

Been running that stuff for ages. The above post is correct apt-get. Forget RD & Man, Debian!

Dude, 2.4.3 is out. I didn't check the release date, but it's been out at least a few days.

Something was wrong with 2.4.2. It wouldn't compile for me, and I couldn't figure out why.

I'm currently using Mandrake Trakopel beta3 on this disk and I have to say it's WAY better than Mandrake 7.2.

RMP 4 is almost as good as apt-get (installing Libranet 1.9 tomorrow on other disk). It tells me if it can't find a dependency and asks me what to do, otherwise it lets me know, that this this and this needs to be installed for appA to work :D

Kernel 2.42, KDE 2.1, Nautilus and XFree86 4.03 :)

I'm downloading Mandrake beta 3 now, on a 56k believe it or not. It's been going at a solid 5 - 6 k/s, however. Almost done with the first CD now. :D

Mandrake looks promising. I'm finally making the complete switch over to Linux. I'm done with Windows. I've got all the necessary hardware to go full force under Linux and do everything I need. Now I just need to decide on a distro.
