I tried to install mplayer but it seems that I have gcc version 2.96 which mplayer won't compile under.. is there a way to "downgrade" to a slightly lower version of gcc like 2.95? or another program that will allow me to watch movies?
also.. the real player linux download site is very esoteric (at least for a newbie like me).. can anyone offer some advice as to what to get?
Thank you!

I have RH7.2 and had the 2.96 errors..."This won't work! Your a fool to compile with 2.96! Don't do it! We won't help you!"
Ignore it, use the -gcc switch to shut it up and go with the compile...I did and haven't seen any of the "Blank video, choppy sound, out of sync frames or not work at all" they SCREAM that is going to happen if you do. Follow the prompts and go with it. I've had no problems and it works great!
(Associate it to .avi's in Gnome and just launch it the the 'mplayer' command...works great!)

Guys I would really install gcc3 for that mplayer then use hte --cc=gcc3 option for RH users install all the gcc3.rpm riles, i ran it w/just the 2.96 and it was good but after retring and getting gcc3 working I compiled mplayer, and wow nice difference. Evidently some mmx stuff wasn't compiled correctly. gcc3 pretty mush took care of it.

well you can do like me, try to install xine, sometimes it's a little bit hard to install, but is worth of it. With xine you can decompress mpeg,divx,avi,.... And some others movie formats!

The problem with Xine is that if you try to play a file that isn't supported, it should ideally give you an error message but instead it just crashes :(
It's good though, and maybe later versions will do this.
