I'm running Madrake 8.1. I have set up my internet account and KPPP. I don't know if I needed to configure both, but I did. When I try to connect, it says "modem ready", then "initializing", then "dialing". Then it keeps initializing and dialing over and over again without connecting. Also, during the set up in KPPP, it asks me to select a country but the U.S. is not listed.
Does that mean it's already set to that by default?

Any ideas?

Since I've never used a modem with Linux or configured kppp, I will just suggest you have a look at the kppp NHF (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/modems/kppp1.html) until someone else can possibly help.

I did follow the Kppp NHF when I configured it, although the example was slightly different than Mandrake.

KPPP is from England, so we here in the US have to manually configure instead of using the wizard. The KDE.org site has a link to KPPP which has some more detailed instructions. Also, is your ISP configured correctly as far as correct number, proprietary software that may be needed. You could try sending a fax using the fax program to see if the modem is getting through to the phone system. Good luck. :)

In kppp turn the modem volume to max so you can hear whats going on. You should hear the modem "pick-up" then the "dial tone" then "DTMF tones", then you will hear the other modem pick-up and some handshake signals then silence. You probably wont get that far because this is the "Logging onto network" part and you don't seem to get that far.

You should check your Modem Timeout setting, s/b 60 - 120 seconds. Also check the pppd timeout setting, s/b 30sec minimum.

As embarrassing as it is, I am going to admit my mistake. I had the phone line plugged into the wrong jack on the modem. Now I can hear the dial tone and
get connected.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help.

Either we don't bother asking simple questions such as 'do you have the cable plugged into the correct jack' or we fear getting the response.. 'of course it is. What do you think I am.. an idiot?'.
