It pains me greatly even to think of asking this. Oh well...Is there any way to run Linux in a window from within MS Windows?

After two years of being more than satisfied with Linux as my primary OS, I'm forced to revert to Windows again. Though this isn't permanent, I don't like it still.

Thanks for any help.

VMWare is the only thing I can think of, though it is quite pricey.

You used to be able to get 'Lin4Win' from the same company that sells Win4Lin, but there no mention on their website, but you may be able to get a copy from somewhere.

The Windows version of VMware will only run on NT or W2K. 95, 98 and ME cannot be used as the host os. I'm not sure what plans they have for XP though.

I have to ask. Why would you want to? Most, if not all, of the advantages of linux (speed, stability, ...) are only valid if it's running as host operating system.

Windows in linux is definitely the better (and cheaper) approach if you HAVE to run windows. Sure, you can't run games in it, but games wouldn't run well in windows if there's a full-blown linux running in the background.

Having said that, you can always check out bochs. It's extremely slow, but it's supposed to be able to run linux under emulation.

The Cygwin Project (http://www.cygwin.com) may also help.

Well the main problem is I'm in college and I moved to a place without a network connection. So I'm forced to use a dialup connection. Which means I need to use a modem. Well the only modem I have is a USR winmodem. I do have a 33.6 BestData hardware modem but have had no luck installing that or a lucent winmodem. That's why I'm using windows.

Anybody got any work-arounds for this? Anybody setup a BestData modem in Linux before? Didn't think so :) Oh well, cest la vie. Thanks for the info.

Well, turns out I'm not as big of an idiot as I thought. I got a modem to work with Linux. Which means I am back to 100% full fledged Linux as my main OS. Hell ya.
