I am planning to build a pc just for Linux. I have redhat 9.0 and Suse 8.2. What is a good cpu. Leaning towards a P3 of Celeron or maybe a low end AMD. This will be a learning box so high speed is NOT a must. I'm an old AIX (IBM) person so Linux looks great to me..

High-end P4s are faster than AMD, but other than that you'll get much better bang for your buck with AMD. You can pick up an AthlonXP 2500+ for $85 and a motherboard for under $70, both at newegg.com. No Intel processor can match that performance level for anywhere near that cheap.

Whichever one you can get :)

I prefer AMD, and the new 3200+ with QuantiSpeed™ Architecture...schweet, and still cost half the price of a "Pentium"

But there is nothing really wrong with Intel, just way over priced

In response to the original post, I'd have to say the fastest one is best.:D

And while I'm on that subject, it's time for a sig change, second 246 arrived!!!

HOORAY!

I'll be trying out the 64-bit test kernel tonight.
So now my screensaver will be smooth while I am compiling the KDE alpha.

I don't think it was entirely worth all that money just for that though..

Which CPU is best

Athlons are the price/performance leaders, but they overheat and burn faster than an Intel. No problem if you have decent cooling and not a one-fan-200w-power-supply trying to suck out a mini-atx box crammed full of ribbon cables, drives, and a video card.

Intel 800 front speed bus and Athlon 64-bit CPU's are like the Lamborghini you see cruising down the road at 95 mph- it would be nice to have one, but right now groceries are No. 1. Someday, though.

The nice thing about technology changing so fast is that by the time I've saved my money for the $400 part, it's now $225 on sale and I can get that new drive since I have all this FREE money! :)

If you are not looking for the best of the best i really don't think that it matters what cpu you get. I look at it this way what cpu mombo is going to give me the best bang for my buck speed & performance wise? I prefer AMD proc's myself right now:D

To be honest, I VERY happy with my opteron.

The thing is just about as fast as the Athlon FX. I can encode mp3's/video faster than the regular Athlon64's, and in some cases I beat the benchmarks listed on the web reviews.

Of course, they are also the most expensive commercially available CPU that is on the market.

In your case man I would just go with an Athlon 64 system. Those are by far the most worth the money.
