i just finnished installing gentoo, after following the manual from their website uber precisely...

but when i boot it up without the CD, everything boots fine untill it comes to a section where white text begins (after the initial grey text) it says "Initial RAMDISK loading started" its goes through a bunch of stuff

---- Beginning storage detection
----- yada yada yada

...some stuff goes here and then we come down to an area about 20 lines from there and it says

--Scanning for usbcore...usb.c:registered new driver usbdevfs usb.com:registered new driver hub
---- detected usbcore hardware
----Scanning for ehci-hcd...hcd.com: ehci-hcd @ 00:02.2, PCI device 10de:0068 (nVidia Coporation)

and that is where it locks up or seises to do anything, the keyboard and mouse are not activated at this point. I have waited for around 15 minutes, but nothing happens... i compiled the gentoo kernel using genkernel, then since i have a audigy and an ati i did

#emerge emu10k1
and
#emerge ait-drivers

after all that was done i proceded with the installation
(was i supposed to recompile the kernel after with genkernel again?)
and then i finnished the installation, everything seeming to go along fine

i searched google and could find anything relating to this

and my computer is as follows:

AMD 2400+
Nvidia nforce 2
512mb ram
old 10gb harddrive (i know it still works fine)
ps/2 keyboard
usb mouse
audigy platinum (the first audigy)
ati-9600 128mb

i think that is all the necessary info...

You need to recompile the kernel for it to pick up the ati and emu modules. For usb to work correctly, add this on the kernel line of the grub config file:
pci=noacpi.
