Hi all -

I've just switched from Mandrake to Debian (via a Knoppix 3.3 HD Install) and now my XMMS isn't working.

XMMS will load up, but once I attempt to play an MP3 XMMS simply freezes up.

mpg123 has no problems, however.

$>xmms &

gives me no error messages, either. I have no idea where to look for an XMMS log, and any advice you can give me would be appreciated.

Also, some info:

root@silver:/# apt-get install xmms
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Suggested packages:
libart2 libgnome32 libgnomeui32 liborbit0
Recommended packages:
libvorbis0
The following NEW packages will be installed:
xmms
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 2 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B/2002kB of archives.
After unpacking 6263kB of additional disk space will be used.
...

I don't install libvorbis0 b/c it tries to remove too many packages and I don't know how to get around it.

And,
[silver] ~ $>xmms --version
xmms 1.2.8
[silver] ~ $> uname -a
Linux silver 2.4.22-xfs #1 SMP Fr Sep 19 17:55:45 CEST 2003 i686 GNU/Linux

TIA -

I've definitely been throught it. Trashing the xmms files fixed it for me though it didn't explain the prob. From your home directory just:
rm -R .xmms

Also just working w/ cdrom's in general causes me a lot of headache from xmms... I think I'll check for a new cdrom plugin right now come to think of it.

[sigh]

that didn't do it.

does anyone know of any logs I can look at to get a better idea? Is it possible something's tying up my /dev/dsp and I need to get rid of it?

It's extremely frustrating, and would definitely appreciate any help you can give me.

Thanks again -

Sounds rough, have you checked the output device in Output plugin prefs? Have you tried removing/re-installing mpg libs (or xmms all together)? This one is pretty strange.

p.s: you may want to try gqmpeg while you're fixing xmms
