I've installed Debian Woody usign the fsn.hu unofficial CDs and everything seemed fine until I got around to setting up GNOME. When I started X I noticed GNOME loaded up with Blackbox as the window manager, and promptly told me it wasn't compliant. I can switch to sawfish using the Blackbox right click menu, but sawfish doesn't show up in the GNOME Control Center window manager list (no WMs do in fact).

How can I set up GNOME to recognise sawfish?

I've tried using the sawfish-gnome deb and the alternative sawfish deb to no avail.

It's easy to do.
In the Gnome Control Center, under Window Manager, click add (it's in the upper right hand corner), then fill in the blanks.
Name: Sawfish Command: sawfish Configuration Command: Click ok, then choose it, and you should be good.

If you want to have the sawfish configurations in GCC then you man need to (require 'sawfish.wm.menus) in your .sawfishrc file.

Oh one more thing, What version of Gnome are you using? If you are using Ximian, there is a known bug between Ximian and Sawfish.
You can't configure it, or do much with it till you remove the Ximian packages. Don't know if that has been fixed yet or not though. :(

Doh! So easy when you know how. :)
I'm assuming the .sawfishrc you refer to is in my home directory?

I'm using the vanilla GNOME that's available on the Debian FTP sites rather than Ximian.
