I posted this on mandrakeuser.org board, but haven't gotten any response from it. Any help would be appreciated!
---------------------------------------------
I got cups to work, and now even better I have color, but I'll tell you how I got it down below and how I'm still confused.
Ok, I followed the generous advice of Xitron and changed over all the symbolic links to /etc/alternatives to the cups daemon, as well as changing the paths within my printcap and adding the appropriate spool directory with /var/spool/cups/. Then I went ahead and edited my runlevel (which is 3 right now). I changed over the link from starting lpd to starting cups, and I removed the link to lpd just to make sure everything would be ok.
On startup I witnessed the cups daemon starting. I'm not sure if there are any other components of cups that should be firing up besides the link to cups in /usr/sbin/cupsd.
Now, when I went to print nothing happened as before when I had this printing problem, and lpc wouldn't work with status as if before lpc, lpq, and lprm still weren't linked. I'm not quite sure why this was, but my guess it's how the cups system works, and I hadn't edited enough files for it's satisfaction.
Anyhow, over my frustration I decided to delete the existing printcap, and spool directory. From there I started the printtool utility and noticed it fires up the cups server... is this different from the cups daemon? I noticed that it's looking for info when it fires up. Anyhow I used the utility to set a printer name and spool, direct it to the correct port, AND select a printer. This time the printer selections we're more defined, maybe because cups is a newer printer system?
After going through these steps and selecting the Epson Stylus Color, Foomatic + stcolor (en), I received a confirmation for a test print. I went ahead and printed, and got a glorious color printer test page.
This is all great and good, but I do not understand what I had done that wasn't right the first time, and second when I checked out the printcap file after this printtool utility, all it had in it was 'fred:'. That kind of tells me that cups doesn't use printcap? Can someone please tell me what files are used in cups, and how you would edit them manually? Thanks!
