I'm trying to use Gaim for Yahoo messenger. I read this, and a couple other threads on the subject, and found I needed to upgrade Gaim. When I try to upgrade I get a dependancy error, just one though. So, I download that file to make the other happy and I get this little message:

The following packages have to be removed for others to be upgraded:
expect-8.4.2-1mdk.i586 (due to missing libtcl8.4.so)
glibc_lsb-2.3.1-1mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied lsb >= 1.3-5mdk)
lsb-1.3-7mdk.noarch (due to missing expect, due to missing glibc_lsb)
pysol-4.82-1mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied tkinter >= 1.5.2)
tcl-8.4.2-1mdk.i586 (in order to install tcl-8.3.3-21mdk.i586)
tk-8.4.2-1mdk.i586 (due to missing libtcl8.4.so)
tkinter-2.3-3mdk.i586 (due to missing libtcl8.4.so)
tuxracer-0.61-15mdk.i586 (due to missing libtcl8.4.so)
do you agree ?

How's that for dependancy hell? Even has the nerve to ask if I agree, the nerve of that thing. I suspect if I try to update one of those I'll get ten more each.

I done a Mandrake update thing. Nothing for Gaim though. I did it from the Mandrake site in France too. I figured it would be the most up to date.

What now? Do I have to wait on Mandrake to catch up?

HELP..

Thanks

If I were you bud I'd just remove your Gaim rpm and get the source code. It's easily built with:-

./configure
make
(Then as root) make install

and no dependancies to worry about :-)

Kinda cool how it's *****ing about Tux Racer though!

Yea, Pysol too. That's a solitare card game..??? Weird?

Also strange that I just updated to Mandrake 9.2 and it already had over 100MBs of updates and this wasn't one of them of course.

I'm trying to get a update through here:

http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/urpmiweb.php#third

Don't know if that would help or not.

I found this on sourceforge, gaim-071-1.src.rpm and also this, gaim-071-1.tar.bz2. Is it the first one or the second one? I'm thinking the second one since it is not a rpm file. What do you think?

Thanks.

tcl-8.4.2-1mdk.i586 (in order to install tcl-8.3.3-21mdk.i586) is causing the problem. you are trying to instal a lower version of TCL/TK by the look of it.

the .src.rpm is sourcecode packaged in a rpm so you can compile it the Red Hat way if you wish, the tar.bz2 is just plain old normal source code.

i dont use Red Hat so i don't know the command to use src.rpms if you want to do it that way.

Well that link I posted and was trying didn't help either. I don't really know how to use it though. It just said it was already there.

I'll download that tar file tonight and install that.

./configure
make
make install

I wonder if IM is worth all this. I have never used it before.

Thanks for the help. Got to check the rear end on my car now. Making noise like it's lacking a bit of grease.

When it complains about glibc not being the right version, I somehow suspect that you aren't using the right RPM. I use Mandrake 9.1 and I upgraded to Gaim 0.70 then Gaim 0.71 without any issues at all. Are you sure you downloaded the RPM that is specifically for Mandrake 9.1? Pick a mirror from here (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/gaim/gaim-0.71-1mdk9.1.i586.rpm?download) and try this. It should work. At least ... I hope. :(

That was the one I went to. I just upgraded to 9.2 so that may have something to do with it. Wonder if I should just boot into Gentoo and do "emerge gaim". That would take care of the dependancies huh?

Thanks for the help though.

My car is half done, just got one side so far. A really big needle and some grease, wa la, fixed. Now for the other side. My back hurts. I dread this.
