I still cant get onto my root acount unless I type my password like 50 times...
once I get it to work I tried changing my password and so I type the original and the two new one and retype the new one and it say "Passwords dont match"
this is really pissing me off, its so annoying...I guess I'm gonna have to reinstall Linux?? My password is simple no crazy characters or anything.

Maybe you could give your Distro and someone could help.

that sounds to me like a dodgy keyboard or something - maybe the wrong keymap ?

Mandrake 8.1
I don't think its the keyboard it works fine for everything else, never had a problem.
And also my password for my User account works every time, just not for the root.

hi,
Probably u forgot the root passwd :D . If that's the case, try typing linux single at the bash prompt and follow the rest of the ritual.

No I didn't forget the root password.
Anyway it finally let me on as root and I went into user manager and somehow changed the root password, the new one seems to work and its even simpler than my last one.
not like they were some crazy password I would forget.
Anyway I think I fixed it, no clue why it was doing that though.

This is a long shot, but it's possible you had a typo when sestting up the root password suring the install. It will have accepted the password cause they matched eachother.
Then when you tried to log in to root, you typed what you meant to be the password, and it didn't accept it until you made the typo again...
Just an explanation....

I was thinking that too, but I would have had to type it wrong 2 times the same way.
I guess its possible...anyway I fixed it.
