multimedia player

I am looking for a multimedia player for linux that will play avi, mpeg, asf, ....
I am currrently trying to get xmms to work but it crashes on any mpeg that I try to play. I am running Mandrake 7.2 and all of the other players will only play a few mpegs and virtually no avi files. This is the only thing that I use Windoze for anymore. I'd really like to have an all around player.

plaympeg works extremely well for mpeg files. I don't know where the url is at, but it's apt-gettable on debian :D Try a search on freshmeat.
