how does one go about dual booting different linux distros?

Don't install bootloaders for the second (third, etc.) distro - reboot to your primary install and use that install's bootloader to handle everything else. Or use boot floppies.

so for instance if I were db'ing MDK and Debian, when I installed Debian, I would choose not to install a boot loader, and change MDK's lilo.conf to point to the boot partition of Debian?

Yup, I wish I have my grub.conf from my laptop handy right now. I have WinXP, Mandrake and Fedora all living happy under the Fedora (Red Hat) Grub with their own /boot partitions...I even left enough free space to install another if I find one I want to try :)

If you need examples of grub configs, make a search on G4L (www.google.com/linux)

I'm currently dual-booting with Win98, but I'm using LILO.
