Hello.

I have this quite old p2 233 mhz PC which I used to share my internet connection through. But the fan was _really_ noisy, so I decided to change it.

And so I did, and while I was at it I decided to add a seccond hdd for additional storage space.

Now, my problem is the following:

When I power up my PC, the fan spinns up, the usuall humming starts and then the PC speaker beeps loud 2 times, around 2 secconds each time.
I dont get any video. Please help.

those beeps are a code that tells you what is wrong. i think they are manufacturer (sp?) specific, so check you motherboard manual. it should tell you exactly what is wrong

Could be anything. I suggest dismantling the machine and rebuilding it.

If that doesn't work, try removing the hard drive and powering it up. It could be over-taxed on the PSU side of things, or it could be a drive incompatibility.

Howdy.

First, find out what BIOS you have (Award, AMI, Phoenix, etc.).

Second, you've got what sounds like a "2-Long" code.

Third, head over to: http://www.pchell.com/hardware/beepcodes.shtml
and look up your BIOS on the guide. You'll then have some clue as to where the problem is.

Hope this helps...

Ok, I have reseated RAM, Video Card and Cpu without luck.
I will try unplugging the hdd now.
If that doesnt work I will try to rebuild it.
Sounds like a good plan? ;)

Thank to you all...

On older systems you can plug in the cable backwards:

Make sure you have it plugged in corectly the HD will have "Pin 1" marked on the drive and the cable will have a white stripe down one side it indicates that wire is for "Pin 1" :)

Hmm.. I think I killed it for good :(

I picked it appart, removed everything and then added hdd, video card, ram, processor and tried to boot it.

It started sparking and smoke came out of the processor (I had the case open so I acctually saw it coming out of the processor, quite cool acctually)

I got video and got the ordinary startup welcome screen atleast. but when It started coming smoke out of it, I turned it off. Now it wont start at all :(

R.I.P

Anyone know where I can buy a new computer of similar specs?

233mhz
128mb ram
12gb hdd

Sorry to hear that:(

You may have install the processor wrong it also has a "Pin out" that must be followed.

I'll cut you a really good deal on a AMD 475. Here is what you get.

Box, PSU, MOBO, processor. I think it has onboad agp. I know it only has ata33 ide.

I'll have to look to see if it has memory and any other system specs I cant recall right now.

The hd was failing so I built a whole new system. Got too good of a deal at my local shop not to.

PM me and I will give you the details. This is going to be the best deal you can get for all of this. I was going to post this in the hardware trading area, but never got around to it. Sounds like you could put this to good use.

Sorry about that. Normally when I get problems with custom made PCs, dismantling and rebuilding sorts it no probs. Too many components that could be misplaced.

I'm guessing that the machine was on its last legs anyhow and nothing could've prevented a failure (although I've never heard of a properly cooled processor smoking).

Hopefully, all of the existing components are OK and you'll be able to transfer the RAM and hard drives etc.

JamminJoeyB,
I appreciate your offer, but since I live in sweden..
Transportation prices will be high you know..

Where can I get a hold of a good old p2 200-300 mhz? :)
Do they still sell those in computer stores?

I would get a router.. but this computer has been amazing.
I really learned alot about how things work insida a computer,
and about linux
when I put it togeather some years ago ago.

BottleNeck. no problem.

Looks like it will go into the hw trading forum once I get all the specs. I know how all of you people out there like the tinly little details.

You might be able to find a 2-300 mhz somewhere. But if all you really need it to be is a router, it might be simpler to just get the router.
