I'm thinking about going entirely to linux here at my college. My college uses Novell, and Groupwise for email, so I was wondering if there was anyway I can get my Groupwise mail from a linux machine. I went to the Novell website, and on their products page i searched for linux groupwise but there was nothing there. I think there was a sparc program or something though. Anyway, does anyone have any ideas?

I believe that the current Groupwise clients are POP3, which means that if you can determine the connection settings for server, you should be able to use any POP3 client.
I have not actually done this because I like groupwise. :)

Does your email system use webmail? If so you can get your email through a web browser. I use GroupWise here at work and am able to get to GroupWise via the webmail aspect of it. I am pretty sure that you could get another mail client similar to GroupWise installed, like Evolution. Evolution is a pretty good app for mail and is pretty similar to GroupWise.

Linux supports the IPX protocol which is what Novell runs on, network-wise. You can use any linux email client with a Novell/Groupwise network. I have been able to browse Netware Directories, recieve and send email on a Netware network using different distros of linux. For Mandrake, Suse, and Redhat you can enable the IPX deamon under the services or server menu to load at start-up so you can browse the network where you have permission to do so. Slackware 9.1 comes with IPX enabled in the kernel. Also, I think Netware and linux can use the same LDAP now.

Groupwise client will work with Linux just fine. The client can easily connect to any POP/SMTP server. I have done this at my work.

how would i go about doing this?
i know the ip address, port number, and the name of the server that it connects too. Is this the information I need? Or do I need different Information?
Thanks for all of your replies
by the way, yes i realize that i can get my mail from the web, but i prefer not to use that one. in fact, groupwise stopped working on my windows machine for some reason, so instead of checking the web i walk to a computer lab instead, that's how much i dislike the web-based one

I'm also at a university that uses Groupwise. They usually have IMAP enabled. Also, for the address books, LDAP is supported by groupwise.
I'm using Mozilla-thunderbird for my email and I've been quite happy. You may have to contact the sys admin for the settings there, but here are my settings:
Account Name: CREOL Mail
Your Name: Jeremiah Brown
Email Address: jdbrown(at)creol(dot)ucf(dot)edu (obviously don't include spam bot cheater modifications when you enter your email address)
Server Type: IMAP
Server Name: imapmail.ucf.edu
User Name: jdbrown
Outgoing Mail (SMTP):
Server Name: mail.ucf.edu
LDAP Address Book:
Name: UCF Groupwise
Hostname: mail.ucf.edu
Base Domain Name: O=ucf (that's capitol letter "o", not number zero)
Return up to: 500 results
Search Filter: (objectclass=*) (include the parenthesis)
Hope this helps.

Swung by the Groupwise Admins desk on the way to a meeting.
He indicated that POP3 connections are normally disabled on the Groupwise backend because some of the widely used mail clients... cough ... Outlook ... cough represent massive stability and security risks.
You will likely need to determine if POP3 connections are enabled and allowed (because they can tell which client you use to connect).

ps. You're bang on with the Web Client. It's crap.:D

lol, yeah the web version is a little slimmed down than the actual client. The 6.5 version of the client and webmail are both pretty good. Gotta love the checklist! :D
