So I just got my first linux system up and running, but I'm having some hangups in trying to install packages etc. Every time I log in as the root user and use Kpackage, konquerer, shell, or basically anything, it crashes that program after a few minutes. The error message is as follows:

So, I have no idea what that means, coming from years of windows use, but if anybody has a clue or if this is a known issue, lemme know the fix. I was able to update with kpackage, for what it's worth.

Thanks all,

update: it now gives me the same message and terminates the program randomly when logged in as the "knoppix" user.

Any clues?

David,

i've seen your post but i have to admit - i dunno!! it doesn't seem like linux behaviour though - it's usually very stable (i've used a couple of distros and they've both been good).

i'm hoping that a few others might help out here; in the meantime, could you just clarify, and correct me if i've misunderstood:

konqueror, kpackage, etc crash when run as root;

the same behaviour when logged in as 'knoppix', which i'm assuming is yourself, or your user account.

do any other programs crash?

sorry i'm not much help!! hoping others can assist!!

ps - i like cars too.. is the mx-3 the small coupe with the v6 engine? being brit, i've got an old mini - it's almost as reliable as windows......but fun nonetheless (unlike windows)

Being that this is Knoppix, tell us about how you set-up and installed. Also, did you install the devlopment packages?

Yeah, I love the old Austin Minis. You can check my website [http://plaza.ufl.edu/mugen23] for more info about the car: 200hp V6 = fun :)

Install:
1) since I know [knew] absolutely nothing about linux, so I used Mandrake to setup the partitions. I know it's using 494MB for swap, and basically splits the difference of 30gb between /root and /home, in ext3 Journal file system.

2) Ran knoppix off the cd, hit ctrl alt f1 and typed knx-hdinstall, which walks you through a system of menus to install knoppix(debian). It DID show errors here, but it kept on installing. Perhaps I have a bad ISO of Knoppix?

3) I don't know if that's enough detail, but that's about all I remember off the top of my head. I did post on the overclockers board (http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?threadid=237967) with my install issues [though that was my laptop, not this desktop, however it could shed light on possible ISO issues]

Thanks!

Also, I did install the development tools.

Davi, what you are seeing are not error messages but the normal operation that goes on behind the scene whenever you perform any movement or action on your desktop. As to what is causing the crashing I would say you have some type of incompatibility isssue, Whether it is hardware or software it is hard to say. If you dont have anything you want to save with this install I would suggest maybe a clean one. Clean and check the disk with one of the disk utilities available. Maybe one that is pertinent to your drive brand.
