Might be an asinine question to ask, but did you remove the old drivers to your voodoo, and did you install the nvidia drivers?

Direct Rendering is most likely not enabled...
glxinfo | grep direct
does that say no or yes?
If no install the nVidia drivers and try again. The default "nv" drivers (or did Mandrake use "vesa" by default?) do not support Direct Rendering.
Install the driver from www.nvidia.com and try the test again. Once you have it saying yes Tux Racer will run good for you ;)

For anyone out there still using Voodoo cards and a modern distro, this is what I had to do in Slackware 9 and Slack 9.1 to enable DRI:
1) Install the Glide-SDK packs from the second CD. Both 2 & 3 as well as the Glide-HR(?) driver that's right for your card.
2) Edit /etc/X11/XF86Config and add:
Load "glx"
Immediately after "Load "dri". Then, at the bottom of the file, create the following section:
Section "GLX"
mode 0666
EndSection
On rebooting, I had Direct Rendering enabled. Whether it's similar or the same with nVidia stuff, I don't know, but this is how to do it with Voodoo stuff. If I've missed anything, I'll check my journal tonight and edit this post.
One thing to mention - ignore the Mesa stuff that's littering the 'net. You don't have to remove this anymore. It's old and is no longer implemented. Don't waste your time.

Sweet, thanks James!
Maybe now if I ever dig out my Voodoo Banshee I'll be able to play Quake 2 with it :)

Well, I'll stick a fiver on it that you manage to get it sorted
Well, as promised, here are my Journal notes:
From Satanic Atheist's notes:
Rendering with Voodoo card not working. Have installed Glide-DRI & Glide-SDK's but still doesn't have rendering. Added 'Load "DRI"' after 'Load "GLX"' & created section "DRI" at bottom of /etc/X11/XF86Config. This section only had 'mode 0666' in it. Set default resolution to 16-bit and reconfigured (unrelated) X. Finally it worked
Hope this helps. With the Voodoo3 Video acceleration in X, I'm laughing my arse off! Seriously - MPlayer is so much faster than any other card. I have a Voodoo3 3500 TV AGP card and I think it has on-board acceleration for video that I never knew about!
