I installed mandrake 8.1, and everything was working great. At the end of the install it has you reboot your computer without the install media for the first time. My network works and everything. I can get on the internet, etc. But I have homework I must do in windows, so I reboot. Then I go back to linux and is shows lo taking forever to start in the aurora screen, and I have no network at all. Working with draknet or netconf I can get it back for on campus stuff only, but no internet. I tried re-installing a couple times, and every time I can get on the internet the first time I boot up, but never the second. What's up?

*umm*

I would suspect either your init scripts are buggered, or somehow your PCI initializations are being wonked. -- possibly POWER cycling the box may help this.. I know that to come back from a windows session on my dual boot box I have to power cycle the system or the sound card gets stranded in the state that winders puts it in .... which just doesn't work in linux.

Yes, except that I can get the intRAnet to work.

And then again, that's only after I mess with it. I could be screwing it up so it works for intranet only if I don't powercycle. Sounds odd, though. Maybe I should try a fresh install, go to windows, and completely shutdown, unplug the machine, and then see if it works when I start up again. yay, there goes another hour of my life re-installing mandrake :(

Don't feel too bad.. I've reinstalled RedHat ~20 times in the last 3 days trying to get an install I wanted and worked. hehe

Hey, I went back to linux to try one more time before I gave up completely, but this time I was sure to cycle the power completely, and when I configured it, it worked! I won't need to re-install after all. It's kind of annoying to have to shutdown completely, but I can live with it. My next step is to check what resources the card uses in windows and see if I can force it use the same resources in linux. I think windows has it set to use a different irq than it used to be after the last windows re-install (different partition table this time to make more space for linux :)). Don't know why that should make a difference though.
