Hmm.. I don't really understand what you're asking, but I'll try..

You say you have Windows installed, and at least one free partition for linux..? You want to know if you need to dual boot?
Well, if you have more than one operating system on your computer, yes. How else would you get from one OS to the other?

I will go with eXtremist.

It does'nt matter if you have partioned a harddisk before the install of linux.

basic is: >2 OS, you need a bootmanager.

For the part which one to use !! There are so many bootmanagers, but standard linux has a bootloader called "LILO"

Lilo can be installed during installation. When you install it in your masterboot it will be configured automatically for the other OS, that will be your windows.

Windows wants to be on the first partition of the first drive. You might find it easier to install Windows first, then Linux. You don't need any special programs other than the boot loader (lilo or grub) that comes with most (all?) Linux distros.

I have always thought that the NHFs here are a great way to start. You might want to check out the NHFs on dual booting here (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/osbooting/index.html)
