Anyone have a link to a really good php/mysql tutorial for a newbie? The one on webmonkey sucks because half way through it they start to get all geekish and use all these terms as if you're suppose to know what they mean. I'm looking for something that'll practically walk me through on installing and using the two together on a unix machine. Thanks in advance!

here's a tutorial i followed when i first got interested in PHP, not much MySQL but the PHP is pretty good... it's aimed towards adult wesite developers so the tasks/examples are usually related to displaying random banner ads or rotate URL's...
definitely worth checking out

www.e-gineer.com is also a good place for Apache/PHP/MySQL/Oracle installation walkthroughs ...
Cheers :)

...to shell out 40 or 50 bucks or so, there are some really good books out there.
"PHP and MySQL Web Development"
ISBN: 0672317842
It doens't go over the installation part, but it does talk about working with both services and getting them to interact.

..the PHP and MySQL Web Dev. by Welling and Thompson (2nd ed.).
Actually this edition does go into the detail of installation pretty well, for Linux and Windows.
Beautifully written. Mine cost $50 in King of Prussia, Phil.
bligatory CD with the book, has (OK, older) versions of the programs, examples, and thankfully, the entire book in pdf format.
Extremely useful the latter 'cos the book doesn't lie flat.

Actually, both apps have good tutorials on their websites:
http://www.mysql.com/documentation/mysql/bychapter/index.html
and
http://www.php.net/manual/en/
I used those two resources almost exclusively and would consider myself a competent programmer in both.

Hmmm,
I don't remember reading the installation part in the book, but that's probably because I had already had experience in configure mysql and apahce with php...so I probably skipped over it...but yes...d*mn good book.
