Hi all,

Can you help me ?

My computer is PIII-500 Mhz; SDRAM: 96Mb; Samsung Monitor - SyncMaster 450Nb. Graphics-card is 4MB, Intel i810 chipset and the Audio-card is Yamaha DS-XG. Both of them are on board.

I installed Linux Mandrake 6.1 in my computer. I get two problem with it. Please solve them.

1/ I can login KDE environment but the colors are very bad and the characters are very big. I think mode is 640x480 and depth is 8. I reconfiged by using 'Xconfigurator'. Although I chose anything, Linux still didn't change colors and mode, like old. Why? Please tell me how to change in to more colors, 16 or 24bits and new mode, 800x600 or 1024x768 pixels.

2/ I can't play music in KDE. Maybe Linux did't detect my audio-card. So what need I do to can play music? Help me.

Please tell me the simplest and fastest to solve those problems without downloading the big files. My connection is very bad.

Please tell me the detail commands and steps. I'm a Linux's newbie. I don't really know much about Linux.

Thanks a lot.

MORE QUESITION: I had Linux Mandrake 7.1 CDs. Now, if I install it, will those problems be solved ?

They probably will be solved by using a newer version of your distro. Mandrake 7.2 is also available and would be even better than using 7.1

If you want to keep 6.1, you can find NHF's on the Yamaha DS-XG and the Intel i810.

yep...7.1 is a huge step up in the autodetection department. Try that and see what happens.

The sound chip should be setup by the kernel, though there is an alsa alternative. Intel 810 video should work fine as well.
