OK. How many out there can possibly have this much trouble getting one machine onto a network?

The machine is a Windows ME machine on the network with my BroadBand Network server running Slackware 9.0.

Now, the server has everything configured and works with all the other machines (except when the DNS goes South). DHCP server, Firewall, routing, Masq'ing - the works.

So, this WinME machine has decided to crash every other boot. Nice. The NIC was detected twice (there is definitely only one in there) and it found (and configured!) a modem that it didn't have. Oh my. First off, wire it up to the network trunking along the wall and patch in the hub.

Network card didn't work. Had never worked. So I swapped it for one of mine. (Oddly enough, used the same driver, but it worked).

Now, cannot find the server. Cables are securely connected but there is no light on the hub.

Knowing that ONE of my CAT-5 cables is duff, I set about replacing them individually with a 20m one. No joy. Great - two duff cables and no spares. So, I'm now running it from the room next door and success! When this network was installed, one socket had a bad connection inside. Once it was redone, that socket worked. Could this be the same problem?

So, thinking the idiot installer didn't wire the place up right, I started dismantling sockets to repatch the 8 little twisted pair wires inside. One had come loose. Great, there's the problem. But still won't connect through that socket. What now?

Turned out it WAS two duff CAT-5 cables, and I managed to hunt down a (temporary) spare. Had to use the 20m one to connect the hub to the socket.

So, can anyone else tell me how unlucky you have to be to work with THIS lot:

1) Windows ME
2) WinNIC that doesn't work under Windows (go figure)
3) Ropey network installation
4) Two duff CAT-5 cables

And manage to get the damn thing to connect?

For a side note, the server performed magically. The accounts I set up for her allowed her to go straight in. She's now (automatically) been added to the DNS and the DHCP server has given her a lease on the network. Access speeds are fast and she's happy browsing the Internet.

And people think we're mad for using Linux.

A mechinic (with a degree from MIT) who did nothing but rebuild old Porsche 356/912 engines (think VW on steroids) for a living titled one of his books on how to do it Right "Murphy is my copilot". Now I think you understand his choice of titles....
