I have had Linux on my machine since December. But since I have spent all my time trying to get X working, I have not looked at anything else.
Is it important to get X working before learning Linux?. Will I be limited to what I can do without it only I cannot afford a new video card for a couple of months.

nope.
you'd prolly learn the basics of linux better without x and its tools.
stuff like mounting filesystems, using vi, creating and removing directories without 'right-click->NEW->folder', in "console" mode makes good habit.
IMO

Thanks for quick reply.
So I can do most things without it! What a bum. What a waste of my time trying to get X working. haha.
I am currently trying to learn Perl. Is this the best language to learn or am I better off with C?
Also I have heard about Links. Since I don't have X installed can this surf the web and view most web sites. It is a pain reading stuff from within windows and then rebooting to try it out in Linux. (The books are too big to print)

learning *nix from the CLI has many advantages... learn c, perl... anything you can get your hands on :)

as for browsing the web from the CLI, you can use lynx.

The best thing is to get an old computer to learn linux on .. surfing with lynx sucks.
If u can get an old pentium with a 500 mb hd u can install Linux without x-windows.

Gives you a very good borland 3.1 clone. It permits the use of more than one language, with syntax highlighting.

What is the problem with X ? How big is your hard drive and what distro are you using?

Most problems are user configuration things.
Stay with something like the SVGA server and X should work, no problems.

Try peanut, ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/peanut ...... typed by hand, sorry if i hit a wrong key.

I like working in the CLI just as much as I like working in X, personally. There's very little I can't do in the CLI that I can do in X. Of course, everything I can do in the CLI is possible in X (xterm is the most used app on my system, I assure you :)), so I stay in X most of the time.

Most of the work I get done is done in a terminal window, so I'd say "yes" you can easily learn Linux with CLI mode only.
