www.freshrpms.net
See "apt" software.
Get it, load it, search this forum.
Result? Nirvana.

Alternative? Visit www.Ximian.com, get the desktop. Use Red Carpet.
I've done this on one of my laptops, and although I really like Ximian Desktop (about as close to Linux-on-the-Desktop as I reckon we are right now) the release updates (as opposed to the 'vulnerability' updates) are a bit behind freshrpms.net. Also note that, once you goto Ximian Desktop, using apt-get is a no-no, unless anyone's other ideas.

Warning, tho' because of the RedHat Fedora thing, things may change in the next few months. I don't know how..but I'm eyeing Debian rather closely...
