I'm doing an 'A' Level in computing in 6th form high school, and unfortunately it looks like we'll be studying Micro$oft Access (and VBasic  ), so I'm looking for something on Linux that I can use to edit and do work on Access databases. Any suggestions? I currently use OpenOffice.org and I know that it doesn't have anything like this. Is StarOffice any good? My dad is also looking for an office suite for win and when I told him StarOffice was as good as MSOffice he seemed unconvinced, probably due to the non-outrageous price tag.

Politically correct answer: Microsoft sells Student & Teacher editions of its software for learning purposes for a discounted price. Check with your local bookstore or ask at school about it.
Politically incorrect answer: get it from Kazaa.

This site has a few listed here (http://www.iam.unibe.ch/~scg/Archive/Software/FreeDB/FreeDB.list.html)
I haven't had any particular need to try any of them but MySQL is one that comes to mind.
Hey,
1. At the moment - as far as I know - there's no real alternativre to MS Access under Linux at the moment - there are loads of database packages - Like MySQL (homey you beat me to it ;) ) but they dont have the GUI's that access does have so you will have to get your hands dirty if you're wanting to play with the database.
2. I use OpenOffice.org for all of my office needs - and as a uni student I need to use spreadsheets, WP, powerpoint equivelents and under both Linux and Windows I run OO rather than MS Office. As OO can read all of the MS Office formats (.doc / .xls) then there's really no need for it - and with a price tag of around £250 for a starter MS Office package there's really no competition.
Hope this helps,
Jme
