IBM has finally produced hack for Thinkpad modems, which I have downloaded. Unfortunately, it needs glibc2 and I have only libc5 in my distribution (OpenLinux). Is there any easy way to point to newer library without getting more recent distribution? Argh...

Not really but if you don't want to upgrade then your only option is to go to gnu's ftp site (ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/glibc) and get latest glibc (2.2.1).Unless you know how to handle glibc compilation i'd advise not to do it or else your system will not work...there are posts about upgrading/compilation of glibc just use the search function on this forum.Hope this helps.
