I am in the middle of compiling the new kernel, when I go into make config, I see the option about the USB support for the rio mp3 player, but its grayed out, cant check it as a module or built into the kernel.. Is this because it is automatically built in, or is it just there for future upgrades?
The rio is about the only reason I still have win2k loaded, cant get the damn thing to work under linux... Oh well enough *****in..

One of the first options that you need to set to "y" is one that asks if you want to enable experimental stuff in the kernel. Set that and most of the greyed out stuff will be enabled for you to choose.

The rio500 driver is considered experimental, but it's still really really stable/reliable (for me, anyway).

thank you... that did it... now do you run rio the same way, being different port address and all?

"being different port address and all?"

Whaa? Basically you need the rio500 programs, you can get them from the rio500 sourceforge page (http://rio500.sourceforge.net/).

There are a few graphical frontends to the command line rio500 tools, you can find them by searching freshmeat.net for rio 500.

pontiouspilate: There is a tiny blurb in the news section of that rio page (http://rio500.sourceforge.net/). Basically, rio600 support is experimental right now, but it should work.

I was just thinking about the CLI rio program, where you sometimes must specify the port address when communicating... I wasn't sure if you had to do this with the rio500 USB..

this may sound reduntant, but what options in the kernel do I have to enable, besides the rio500, and the one for experimental things.. still cant get it to see, I loaded /proc , USB fs, Rio500, and the ones I needed, but for some reason it still doesn't see it..
