I have recently downloaded SuSE 8.2 and Nvidia's newest driver for Geforce graphiccards - but I can't install the driver ..
Is there anyone with a a working Nvidia driver on this distribution who can tell me what i might be missing ?
I have installed the kernel-source and bin-utils, is there more to it .. ?

Why don't you try doing something smart, such as using the search button http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=109901&highlight=nvidia+drivers+suse
or, http://www.justlinux.com/forum/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=758719&sortby=lastpost&sortorder=descending

Could you please be a bit more specific as to what Nvidia package format (.rpm or .sh) you are attempting to install, how you are going about installing the package and exactly what the problem (errors etc.) is you are having.

I'll bet you need to drop out of X for the nvidia install...

I was having a similiar problem compiling the nVidia drivers too (for my RH .20-9 kernel). I had to use Synaptic to install the kernel source in order for it to compile. For some reason when i manually downloaded the rpm from the ftp site and install it, the compiler still couldn't find it...

Your problem/solution? I don't know, but i thought i would give back a bit :-) Like i said, as far as i could tell, the source file LOOKED like it installed correctly via rpm, but when i did a "rpm -qa | grep kernel" i didn't see the rpm listed (never did figure out why it wasn't installing).

Also, i think you DO need to drop out of X to do it... Although im not sure if its required, just seems like best practice...

elderdays - don't be a dick, dude... its an honest question... the search function can be a bit finicky... its nice of you to add links, but you can be nicer about how you do it!

In my experience(with the .sh package), you DO need to ALWAYS install it outside of your X server. It will exit with those instructions if you do not.
