is there a news ticker for kde that will display regular news from around the globe.

the built in one only checks some sites, as much as i like programing news, i need one that will tell me if some one
bl@w$ somethin up in kansas or antarctica kinda like the one that cnn ( i think  ) has (you have to pay
for it)

any help or suggestions would be of much importance..

You can use KNewsTicker for that, you just need to configure it some.

First, head over to http://www.newsisfree.com and do some searching--the By Category link in the sidebar is a good place to start. You'll most likely want to use the Top News and Regional categories.

Find some sources you like, and get the RSS feeds for them (personally, I picked AP World News, CNN, and my local paper...I had more on my older computer, but I didn't need so many sources). When you go to a page for a news source, you'll a link like "get the free RSS export of this source here". Click the link, and on the next page, get the URL of whatever the blue RSS image is linked to. It will usually have the extention .xml.

Now, go into the KNewsTicker preferences (right click on the ticker, choose Configure KNewsTicker), go to the News Sources tab, and click the add button. Fill in the name, category, and RSS feed URL. Click OK, find it in the News Sources list, and make sure it's checked. Click OK in the preferences window, and you're done.

Of course, you might want to use the Check News feature after you update your sources (right click on ticker, choose Check News)

I'll save you a bit of time searching. Here are a couple of RSS feeds:

CNN: http://xml.newsisfree.com/feeds/15/2315.xml (note: the CNN source that comes with KNewsTicker is broken...replace it with this one)

AP World News: http://xml.newsisfree.com/feeds/69/1469.xml

Its not the news ticker that is limiting you. The website needs to have a RSS version of their website for those tickers to work with them. So I wouldn't be looking for a new news ticker, but rather trying to find websites that have a RSS version.

here is a little more info on RSS

Are you doing this as root?

Have a look in

/home/<user>/.kde/share/apps

for the application and in that directory should be the config files.

Also in /home/<user>/.kde/share/config
