I have a Linux box running RedHat 9. I had set it up to share a Printer running on a Win95 machine. When I initially set up Red Hat, it saw the machine, and successfully configured and printed to the printer. However, I now cannot see the machine or printer in the printer config window, and I cannot use the printer. There is another Red Hat 9 box on the network which can see the win95 machine, and is still successfully printing to it. Can anyone think of why I might no longer be able to see the windows shared items?

Thx.

Patrick

Just like you drew there: the printer is on the win95 machine. All machines are plugged into the same router/hub, which is a standard 3com 20-port type setup. Keep in mind: both boxes USED to be able to print, so something must have changed on the one redhat machine to make it not work. That's what I'm trying to figure out.

There must be something set up differently on the RH machine that won't print now. Something in the configuration must've changed.

You're fortunate to have another RH machine on your network that currently does print. Compare your configuration on the functional RH machine to the one that won't print. More than likely you'll find the answer somewhere in the difference between the two configurations. At any rate, it would be helpful to know what driver(s) or printing utilities you are using on both linux boxes to send print output and jobs to the Samba server.

I currently have the opposite setup of you on my Samba server. I have a linux box set as the samba server and have an HP Laserjet printer connected to the parallel port of the linux box. I'm using CUPS to run and manage print jobs. I highly recommend this setup to anyone, as you simply set the output type to "raw" under CUPS, which leaves you worry-free of choosing the proper driver or PPD under linux. Then you simply load the windows printer drivers on the windows clients and point them to the network printer and that's all the configuration you'll ever need. Also, you'll be able to print directly from the Samba server linux box using this setup, as well.

Now, as far as setting up another linux box as a Samba client, I haven't had to do that so far.
