The latest nvidia drivers lock up my system when I try to exit from X. It's a total lockup....can't do anything. I'm afraid of all the crashes corrupting my filesystem. Any ideas what is wrong here?
I am running a tnt1 under debian with a 2.4.6 kernel. Everything seems to work great until I try to exit from X

That's a tough one, not sure what it might be. If you don't use opengl then you might as well use the nv driver as it's extremely stable.
I'm using a tnt1 also and it's running great with the new drivers.

look another victoria boy :-)
Trying to watch any sort of video under the nv drivers is pathetic. that's why I like the nvidia drivers. OpenGL is a feature I use a little bit, so I'm not going to give it up unless I have to

Too many computer geeks in this city :)
Have you tried older nvidia drivers? I couldn't use the 12x ones so I was stuck using some older ones until the latest ones were released.

I forgot that video isn't accelerated with nv, need a fast cpu to play videos with it.
You could try disabling some things and see if it makes any difference, add this underneath "Driver "nvidia"" in your /etc/XF86Config-4 file:
Option "NoAccel" "1"
Option "NvAGP" "0"
