I'm installing Linux Mandrake 7.2 on a P166, with a 1.6 GHDD, and 32MBRAM (don't worry, I've ordered additional RAM).
First time I tried the install (using the floppy and CD), the graphical installation screen gave me errors right about the drake partitioning wizard. Then I got an error when I selected the type of install. It acted like it was installing, but gave me a error and dumped me back three previuous steps.
I tried the text install thinking I didn't have enough memory. I received the following errors:
crc error <6> autodetecting raid arrays
VFS: Cannot open root device
Kernel panic: VFS 08:06: unable to mount root fs on 08:06
What do I need to do?
I also intend to network this with a windows 98 machine.

Did you change the conector of your drive after installing Mandrake (I had a similar setup and never had any problems)??

huh? i dont get it
my suggestion would be to check the mode in the bios for the hard drive (also if its a seagate, throw it away, bad experiences with those fux0rs!) there are several different modes like large lba and usually an auto mode, set it to that if you can and if that doesnt work set it to lba, also if that doesnt work (set it back to auto) try to make a /boot partition first (bout 20 megs) then your / partition

I have expirienced kinda the same problem with my system AMD K6-350 with 196 MB of Ram . I solved it with putting the Hardisk into "Normal" Mode in ther bios . After that the prroblem dissapeared . Not that i have installed Manbdrake yet coz it hangs at the initialisation of the cdrom . If somebody knows a solution for that problem i would be very happy !

Thanks for the help. It actually went through most of the install (actually about 15%), when I received an error that said
error installing package list
crontabs-1.7-10mdk, stat-1.5-16mdk, hdparm-3.9-5mdk, basesystem-7.2-1.mdk, xFree86-libs-4.0.1-26mdk, freetype-1.3.1-8mdk. mesa-common-3.3-14mdk
After that it cycles back to asking me which package I want to install: minimum, custom, recommended. No matter which one I pick, I get a "base system package not selected error"
Is there something wrong with my hard drive, or does the problem reside elsewhere?
dang that is strange, maybe it is a bad build or something? take it back to the store. Ive never had a problem when using cheapbytes.com. did you format the hd before trying to install or are you trying to lay it down over a dos partition or somthing?

I'm trying to lay it over the hard drive as-is. I didn't format it, but when I first booted it, it stated that the OS was missing.
Any solutions? I ordered a new drive a few days ago to add to the existing. I"m wondering if I should remove the old one altogether.
