It is supposed to have kernel 2.4 in it. I am curious to see if it will see my QuickCam Express USB cam and other lil things as well. bdg1983 02-07-2001, 03:18 PM I'm using SuSE 7 on my machine at home. treatment 02-07-2001, 03:40 PM Guys, I'm moving this discussion to the General-Linux Question forum. mmmkay? ph34r 02-07-2001, 04:36 PM  Slackware   Linux From Scratch (http://www.linuxfromscratch.org) r@nd0m @cce$ 02-07-2001, 05:38 PM Here's my favorite: http://www.suse.com/us/images/suse71_front.gif Lend273 02-07-2001, 05:41 PM I have run the following distros: 1.Redhat 7......Not bad but I really didnt like RPM's. 2. Slackware 7.0 - just could not get it configured with my hardware properly. I got frustrated with it pretty quick. 3. SuSe 7.0 - liked it but wanted to try Debian. 4. Libranet Debian - very nice......like apt-get. Easy to configure....great support. 5. Storm Linux 2000 - Best yet...... easy to configure, full featured, lots of apps. Bad news is it looks like Storm has gone belly up. But I'll stick with it cuz I like it. And it's debian so I'm sure I can keep it up to date. I'm still hoping Storm gets itself straightened out. But they still haven't replied to an email I sent to them 3 days ago......so it doesn't look good. My 2nd choice would be Libranet as I like debian best. Just my 2 cents. Then I switched to caldera for about a day, then to Mandrake 7.1, which I'm using now. My next distro will be SuSE though, just to see if it's as good as I've heard. After that, I'll probably go for debian, just to make sure I'm not tied into a certain distro company. teeitup 02-08-2001, 06:33 PM Department file servers Debian, 1 slink, 1 woody Laptop -> Debian! Morph 02-09-2001, 06:52 AM Drake 7.2 INstalled first time on my dreaded intel i810. I couldnt believe it. I virtually had to do NO configuration. My flatmates said it is easier to download and install than their WINDOW$ 2000 ME 98. I used to run RH6.1 but it got to be a pain. I coudl never get licq to work. As soon as I got Drake installed I was able to get DIVX working first time with no probs :D :D Crankshooter 02-09-2001, 09:57 AM Ran Redhat for a couple of months, got bored, now its been Slackware all the way... it r0x. witman 02-09-2001, 10:00 AM :cool:Redhat  thor4linux 02-09-2001, 10:41 AM I started with REDHAT 6.0. then i found Drake 7.0 and 7.1. I got a free cd with RH 7.0 and KDE 2.0. tried to install KDE 2.0 on my darake 7.1 system, wouldn't work. to many failed dependacies. so i installed RH 7.0. Got KDE 2.0 to work but not much else, couldn't even get kppp to work or the RH ppp manager. So, i'm back at Drake 7.1 and waitng for SuSe 7.1 to come out. after that i'm going to try slack and debian. LoRdMaUL 02-09-2001, 11:34 AM well I attempted to install Red Hat "Fisher" last nite and had all kind of "fun"....After I burned the ISOs to cd-rom....I proceeded to make a boot disk and then slapped the disk in my machine and rebooted....oddly enough it didn't even attempt to boot off the disk so I figured the disk was bad so I made another one. Same thing happened. So i tried booting off the cd and it did boot...and I entered "text" to go into the text mode setup and then the screen turned solid blue and then it said it was shutting down due to an Anaconda error....I rebooted again and this time it wouldn't even boot off the cd...grrrrrrrr...guess I will wait for the official release or something.... Big_daddy 02-09-2001, 11:36 AM Drake 7.2 in the house LoRdMaUL 02-09-2001, 02:27 PM I tried Mandrake 7.2 but I never could get it find a modem ...I can't see the point of having it if I couldn't get online...so I got rid of it.... element-x 02-09-2001, 02:39 PM  Slackware  but I have gone through, Mandrake, Redhat, SuSE, and Debian. Tyr-7BE 02-09-2001, 06:49 PM I'm running Mandrake 7.2, and it's great 'cause I'm a newbie...I'm gaining experience and thinking of moving to either RH 7, or SuSE 7.1 (shipping soon :D ). Once I get a) Good enough, b) A new hd (looking at a 60-gig  ), I'll try Debian and Slack, as they seem to be the distro of choice for many users who know what they're doing. Also gonna try FreeBSD and BeOS :) Question: What's SuSE like? Strengths? Weaknesses? Recommended user level? I know that it has support for those damned RPMs, but it's not a native-deal like with RH and Drake. Lonely Cat 02-10-2001, 12:49 AM Mandrake 7.2, :) I tried RH7.0, not as good as Mandrake. (Peanut rules at the moment) & Linux From Scratch. legaviu 02-10-2001, 08:35 AM Mandrake 7.2 :) JBLinux :) Tiny Linux :) muLinux :) Peanuts :) Conectiva  (need to try it more, but easy) Used before, but left them: Red Hat :( Caldera :( For server installation, Mandrake is best, though JBLinux or Peanuts are best for standalone workstations, and faster too. TinyLinux is based on slackware and can be used on a 486 with 8Mb and 120Mb, and though its nice and easy, you need a lot of help to get this running under X with network support. MuLinux works great with 386 and 486 boxes with at least 4Mb RAM. Have tried Caldera, the only great thing I like about it, is that it has two dos emmulators that can con in handy ocassionally, though emudos is out there. RedHat, has great documentation, but prefer Mandrake that is based on RH and has better support through command line or GUI interface, that allows you to reconfigure your Linux Box. Conectiva is a good option as well. Downloading Slack, Suse, Stampede now. I started with BestLinux 5.3 (Biggest/most popular/known distro in Finland), then BestLinux 2000-R1, R-2 and now with ABIT BE6-2 v1.2 board Gentus Linux. There has also been RedHats, like 6.1,6.2 and 7.0 beta witch by the way sucks x1000. And also i have tried Corel Linux 1.0 beta and 1.0 final, and both of them suck x10 000! With current mb, Gentus is definitely the best for me. bisk 02-10-2001, 11:25 AM I have tried most distributions , redhat , caldera, debian , mandrake , turbolinux , corel , suse. Sure most of them work and are pretty but the one distribution I keep coming back to is Slackware. I have 2 slack boxes , and would not have it any other way. justlinux.com
