I am trying to get out of windows. So i made space in my computer (like 10 Gb) and put there RH 8.
All went pretty good till i tried to connect to internet with my adsl connection.
The point is my provedor knows almost so much like me about linux.
i have noly one computer. dual boot xp - rh 8 , not a home metwork.
and i am an end user.
i can enter to my adsl modem and look there with mozilla. but that's all.
that means my network card eth0 is active but i don't know how to configurate ppp0.
or what to do.

Does your ADSL provider use rppoe?

I don't know!!! how can i know that?

i feel like homer simpsom looking for the key key.

Well, let's try if it works:

As root:

Run adsl-setup to configure your adsl connection.

Don't forge to specify your ISP's DNS.

Once everything is configured, run adsl-start to connect and adsl-stop to disconnect.

Hope it works.

ok.
i 'll try it in another 5 minutes.

To use your pppoe connection you can't assign an IP adress to the card connected to the modem.
Try looking in /etc/sysconfig/networks-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and disable the inet_addr or something like that (i don't know if that's the exact path i'm going by head from my MDK Box configs)

what??!!

oh man that really was in martian right?

wait. i need to put a ip to the eth0 if not how i activete it?

i can try to use the ip of the eth0 card for the ppp0 and the ip of the modem for the gateway?

but what i do with the eth0? i need that active to use internet right?

i am talking sense here?

You're partially right...
Gateway=modem-ip
eth0 will work without an ip adress attached to it, however you won't be able to use that box on your network.
I have a network of 3 boxes, and i also have a PPPoE adsl connection and i've bought a router . That way i can have an internet connection and my home networking running at the same time.

malloc : i don't have a home-network. i have only one computer. box? well that. standalone i think .
and yes, i found that i don't need to put ip to the eth0. :D

but

serz:

i did that and configured the ppp0 (pretty friendly)

i did the adsl-setup
with and without DNS (my isp have this idea about being not necesarily)
then i got a message: /sbin/ifup to start
and /sbin.... status to know the status.

and here i got the error:
/sbin/adsl-start: Line 217: 4030 Terminated/ $CONNECT "$@" >/dev/null 2 > & 1

that's all

i got the feeling of being so closeeeeeee

Well that meens that either your packets can't get out or your isp can't establish a connection to you. My ISP does that sometime those little sob's drop my connection when it's been up for about 24h and then block all connections for a few minutes and change my ip. Acording to some "inside sources" they to this to keep people from having their own servers. Go figure...

Anyway enough gruntig from me...did you used the ifcfg-up (or something like that) or did you use rp-pppoe? Also did you saw any activity in your modem while it was trying to connect? Make sure that you have the right gateway adress. Also see if you really have the eth0 up and running, i had some problems about disappearing eth connections.

yhotg

how i know if the packets can't get out or if my isp can't stablish a connection?

i used adsl-setup to setup the ppp0. Don't know any of that things (ifgfg-up? rp-pppoe?) to try to start ppp0 i used ifup ppp0 and after that i tried adsl-status but didn't work.

the gateway=ip of the adsl modem?

the eth0 was running over all the place, and up.

any other idea?
in plain end user format?

well, i tried again with a call to my isp to be sure in the middle.

i found:
the isp don't registered any intent of my computer to connect to the internet.

the eth0 was inactive. (i configurated it without ip adress attached to it like malloc said)

when doing /sbin/ifup ppp0 and then
adsl-status i got:
"note: you have enable demand-connection; adsl-status may be inacurate
adsl-status: Link is attached to ppp0, but ppp0 is down"

then i saw that eth0 was inactive so i tried to active it but wasn't possible. so i put again the ip and activated it and did the same (/sbin/ifup ppp0 and adsl-status)
i got again:

"/sbin/adsl-start: Line 217: 4030 Terminated $CONNECT "$@" >/dev/null 2 > & 1"

other ideas?

Could you give a bit more information about your network setup (hardware)? e.g. what type of network card? do you have a broadband router?

You said you can access your modem with Mozilla - what exactly do you mean? What is the IP address of your computer?

yhotg
09-21-2003, 06:14 PM
lets see:

i have adsl. for modem i mean alcatel modem.
the black box that's connected to my computer by one side with a cable and by the other side to the telephone line.

my ethernet card:
VIA PCI 10/100 Mb Fast Ethernet Adapter
Location: PCI bus 0 , device 18, funtion 0
(built in the board)

(i don't have a network, u know? i have only one computer. and i want to connect to internet by my adsl isp. i don't plan to have a network.)

i don't know what is a broadband router, if u mean the alcatel adsl modem then yes, if not, then no.

i can access to the alcatel with mozilla when eth0 is active. and see the index and the setup.
but when i connect with windows to internet, like now i don't need to do nothing there, is all automatic.

ip of my computer? in windows there is local area conection where i have the ip of my network card
and the adsl connection where i put the ip of the alcatel modem.

i tried that in linux. i already copy the messages i recive.
i don't know if there is anything else you want to know about my computer.

Darn...I've just saw that i forgot to hit the submit button earlier...
Anyway, if you can access your modem, that meens your eth0 does have an ip, and that that ip is in the modems subnet.
What exactly have you done to remove the eth0 ip?
Also take a look at this faq, it's for mdk but it should help you a bit.

Check to see if you have the package installed "rp-pppoe". Most distro's do. Documents included.

At the commandline type...adsl-setup...a configuration will come up. Answer the questions and remember how you answered each time , if you cant connect the first time.
The first question asks you for your name that was assigned by your isp.....enter it.
The second will ask you for the interface you are using....just hit enter for the default (eth0).
The next question will be something about an on demand setting. A yes or no question...answer "NO".
The next about DNS.....just type "server".(do not enter any numbers)
The next is about firewall...choose #1.
The next is your password...enter your assigned ISP password. Then it will ask if you want to save the config..say "Yes".
Now type at the prompt.....#adsl-start....you should connect.
To check.....#adsl-status.
To shut down.....#adsl-stop.

Need more concise help......http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/how-to-connect.txt

i started linux ---> loged in gnome ----> opened preferences -----> network ------> then a window where i can see my eth0 and the ppp0 opened ---------> there i selected eth0 and edit ---> in general says automatic find ip with dhsomething or fixed ip. ----> in fixed ip when installing linux i entered my eth0 ip and subnet masc ---> so to take it away i simple deleted them there. ----> after finding the eth0 wasn't active i put them again with the same procedure. ------> so i have eth0 active -----> but still don't have ppp0 active and don't have internet in linux -------> and the error message is the same ----> with the eth0 active (with ip) i can look in the modem (like that help me) but not activate ppp0 -----> without etho i can't do nothing.

sorry, i can recive pretty nice and friendly error messages lol.

(i am already downloading disc 3 of mandrake 9.1.
only i can't burn cds and need to install from iso from the computer "without booting with floppy disc because -sigh big one- in the store they forgot to put a cable..., - big big sigh, maybe tomorrow i'll go to take my cable ask where to connect it and brake all the place..)

hope mandrake will help with the adsl problem....,

I think that those GUI config things have some small "bugs" if i can say.
Try doing this, go to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and look for the iface ip var and change it to "". Reboot and try it again. That should do the trick

There's a variable somewhere that says iface_eth0=something
if it's not called iface_eth0 it's something close, like eth0 adress or something like that. Also did you had a chance of seeing that how-to i've posted earlier? It's a very nice one and should guide you in the right track.

i 'll try to install mandrake 9.1 from computer with boot disk, if i can make the boot disk. (looking now for how to do a boot disk for installing)

after that i'll read the how-to u posted.

well, i installed mandrake 9.1
and still i can not connect to internet.
i need to use pppe or pptp?
i have the ip of the eth0 and the netmask
i have the ip of the adsl modem (gateaway?)
but mandrake ask again and again for the dhsomething of the local server.

i really don't know what to do.
i put all the information that i have. and there must be something that everybody knows but me about how (the f****) connect linux like a standalone to internet with adsl.
the eth0 is active....,

oks..., don't know what else to do. i'll look some time to the ceiling, maybe there's something....,

i thought about something....,
my isp (in windows) ask me to configurate adsl connection with VPN

can it be the problem?
that i need to configurate VPN in linux?
is that posible? how?

yhotg

in windows i have :
in Local area connection in the properties of tcp-ip protocol ip and netmask.
(i think that is the configuration of the eth0)
after that i have Virtual Private Network
in the properties the isp made me put in host name or ip adress of destination the ip of the adsl modem
in security: optional encryption, in protocols: allow PAP and SPAP
in networking :
type of VPN : TTPT VPN
TCP-IP: obtain IP automatically

maybe someone knows how to translate all that to linux?

step by step?

malloc

On mdk for your connection to work just do this...
edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcg-eth0
Change the IP=something to IP=
then change the onboot or bootp to no
reboot and that should do the trick.
Don't use the mdkcontrol center because it won't work. edit the file by hand

I gave you the very easiest way to connect to your dsl provider several post back. You are trying to do things the hard way. Check my post again and also the link I gave. It takes me less than 5 minutes on a new installation to set-up my adsl on get online. Why would yuo be on a Virtual Private Network?

i tried that but didn't work. Well i tried that when i had the rh8.
didn't try with the mandrake.
i was trying to do so, but can't log in as root.

not to do so, not to do what malloc said. :(

At the prompt.....# su
then you will be asked for the password...this will log you in as "super-user"...root priviliges.
Go through it step by step and report any errors back here before you proceed with anything else. Keep track of the info that you input each time.

johnT :
thank you for all the adresses and help.

i know all my question sound very stupid.

I did again the adsl-setup in the super user -terminal..., i formated and installed again mandrake 9.1 to do the adsl-setup from 0.
but still is not working.

when i do the adsl-setup is not possible to set up ips or gateway. so, where to set up eth0?
or is not necesary?
because after i did the adsl-setup, like u said. the eth0 got an ip adress and netmask that is not the one i got from the isp.

(is good idea to put here the ips? to be more clear?)
maybe that's my problem, that i am confusing the numbers?

and last, i am asking here because i already read a lot (a big lot) of how-to's and books (i have a nice two big books) but i can't understand all that.
