greetings fellow penguinistas,

While browsing the net I came across a site: http://onion-router.nrl.navy.mil
that had some links to pages that would run a scan on ur box that told you what browser ur using, o/s, screen res, memory etc I was wondering how this was done (or what the process is technically called)how it is accomplished and if theres any way to fool such a process? i.e. having it think my Linux sys is actually a win system?

Thanx for any help,

andrew a.k.a asymblor

p.s. I don't want explicit info just a start 8-) so I can learn to do it myself.

Not sure about memory, but for screen res/color depth, os, browser, etc. you can do it thru javascript.

Also, you can prolly do a lot more than the sample I whipped up with java.

I appreciate that info but what I was asking is how can I fool a site or say a operating system scanner into thinking im running a different o/s than Linux or what part of my Linux o/s or netscape browser is responsible for giving out information on the version of operating system and various other tidbits that snoopy sites try gathering from your system?

Opera can do it. It depends on certain tag generated by the http request. I think you can find more about it on www.netcraft.com (http://www.netcraft.com)
