existing domain and Samba

from all i read, samba is geared toward windows workgroup clients. but can i use it just the same with a 2000 domain? if i configure samba.config file correctly, should the linux machine just start showing up in the 2000 domain "network neighborhood"?

Yes, it works the same.

There are a few things you need to do to participate in a domain. First, you need to setup the WORKGROUP= variable as the domain name. You also need to turn on encrypted passwords and set authentication to DOMAIN. Once all thats done you join the domain using the smbpasswd command (read the man pages for more details). Voila!
