I'm running a Redhat 9 with samba. Nothing fancy just plain sharing with user level security.

When I access the server from Windows 2000, I get a login prompt and I log on an everything works super.

When I use XP pro. I get a login prompt after almost a minute and when I logon I just get the login prompt over and over. However, if I change my password on the linux machine to the same as I already have I can log in from my XP machine. This sticks until I reboot my XP machine. Then I have to change the linux pw again.

Anyone have any clues?

I consider Samba XP support to be extremely poor at the moment. Hopefully it will improve.

Some of the problems I've had are:

Network shares take over a minute to come up
Sometimes they map but cannot be accessed (share was moved or deleted...)
Disabling the XP encryption system

Make sure you've done everything for the latter and disable password sync'ing from the XP box (it may be changing the password as it logs onto the domain).

Samba is a pain in the neck to setup for XP.

My wife uses XP Home on a laptop and it comes up just fine, shares, passwords you name it.

XP Pro on the other hand uses Encrypted passwords and there is a registry entry you have to change.

You might check out Samba's site for more information on Permission issues for XP Pro. :D
