I have read a few threads about people "streaming mp3s from there server" and was wondering what software do they uses to do that. Is it like an ftp where you download the song then play it or is it actually a live audio stream. Is this something i can do with an extra machine and pipe it to my main pc and *crosses fingers* my home sound system.
Thanks

i was thinking of doing exactly what you have in mind. what i have found so far is the gnu 'mp3 daemon' project which allows the streaming of mp3, ogg and other audio files across a network. i haven't got much further than preliminary research, but go to google and type 'mp3 daemon' in the search field and you should be rewarded with a list of sites...
hope this gets you started!

I believe one of the best (if not the best) available is gnump3d, like it was said before. It's very easy to run and to configure and has a lot of capabilities
i use GNUMP3D (http://gnump3d.sourceforge.net/)
it is stable, easy to set up, and small.

I use Icecast sometimes with liveIce-xmms for playing unsigned bands with an xmms playlist and sometimes with Muse for when I want to do live discussions via gnomemeeting and live internet radio.
some times I'll invite a band over or a dj friend to entertain my internet friends with a live show. liveice can also be used as a mp3/ogg fileserver.

OMG gnump3d is absolutly the greatest linux program i have ever seen. With in 3 mins i was up and running. No if i could only i could figure out how to set it up so i could access it at work. Is there any place to register for a free dns or a redirect service.
Thanks
