Hello everyone,

Does anyone happen to know how to start Gnome? I am quite the newbie, and will explain my situation. I am currently dual booting Red Hat 7.1 with Windows ME. I did a workstation install for Red Hat, and I know that when it said which packages to put in, I selected all of them, I selected, Gnome, KDE, and Games, but the problem is that I have no idea where they are, or how to install them. Any ideas?

I was told that I had to change the etc/inittab file a bit, i changed it from
id:3:initdefault
to
id:5:initdefault
and I don't think that that did anything.

Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated, thank you very much for your time.

Take care,

Nathan

Create a file in your home directory called
.xinitrc and add the following to it

exec gnome-session

then run startx and you should go into gnome.

Good luck

You could also use "switchdesk gnome" then "startx” This way would be a little easier :)

Actually if Gnome doesn't startup itself after a normal workstation install, then something must have gone wrong with the video configuration.

Try 'startx' and then post the errors if you get any.

You can also try to reconfigure X using xf86config or xf86cfg.

And, don't forget that from an xterm, just typing "switchdesk" will get you a graphical thingy with all the installed possibilities, ready for clicking.
