i was going to buy a new laptop, but i was wondering in the shop, next to these laptops with "designed for microsoft windows XP" stickers on them...

what if slack didnt work well on it ? what if it didnt recognize all the hardware ? im not a noob, but im not an experienced user, i cant recompile the kernel, and its impossible to find drivers on the net ...

here's my question: has anyone installed slack on a laptop, and got EVERYTHING working without any configuration after the installation (vga, network card, usb, ps2, sound etc ..) ??

thanx

I havent heard of anyone installing slack without any configuration :p

but between hotplugging(enable it during install; itll load modules for you for your hardware), and xf86cfg you dont need to do too much

after install run xf86cfg then it'll probe for settings, then just save it to /etc/X11/XF86Config

I have a Compaq Presario 700EA wich by the 10k stickers that it brings saying "For Wind0ze XP" (i suspect it was made thinking about XP only :D)
I've installed MDK 9.1, Slack 9.0 and Gentoo 1.4 and they ran directly from boot, no extra config needed. So go ahead and buy yourself a laptop and have fun ripping those nasty stickers off it :D

One thing about slackware to remember. If you get it installed and it reboots on it's own after about 15 seconds or so, it's because of the hotplugging. I posted about this in another thread with a link to a temp fix.

Just something to keep in mind.
