My current box uses the MSI 875P Neo-FIS2R motherboard and v1.6 of the
BIOS.

My SATA and IDE devices are cabled as follows:
IDE1 master = CD-RW
IDE1 slave = ATA66 HDD
IDE2 master = ATA100 HDD
IDE2 slave = ATA100 HDD

Serial ATA controlled by ICH5R:
SER1 = SATA 160GB HDD
SER2 = SATA 160GB HDD

The BIOS is currently set to boot off IDE2 master.
all drives are visible to the BIOS and accessible under windows xp,
but I am unable to install SuSE 8.2 Pro on this box - basically when I
boot from the SuSE CD and commence the installation it freezes. This
has only occured since I installed the SATA drives.

My understanding is that kernel 2.4.20 does not support SATA drives,
hence the system freeze. Does anyone know how I can install SuSE 8.2
Pro on this box without having to resort to opening the box and
unplugging the SATA drives? Is it possible to boot the SuSE 8.2 Pro
CD and then use a later version of the kernel for the installation?

You may be able to pass parms to the kernel during the installation process the same as was done for the ATA66/100 controllers back when they were not natively supported by the current kernel versions. (see the JL Help File on ATA66)

Have you tried the SuSE Knowledgebase or searched G4L about installing to a SATA HD?

I solved the problem by configuring the SATA drives as legacy rather than native in the BIOS.
