I recently attempted to install gentoo 1.4 and thought I had gotten through the install okay, but when I tried to boot into it, it hangs when it says:
Beginning Storage Detection:
Scanning for aic7xxx...

Did I accidentally add or leave something out of the kernel that I shouldn't have? Thanks in advance.

What is referred to by "aic7xxx"? Presumably some removeable device that was connected during the install, but is not anymore.

What device is this? Can it be reconnected?

Do you have a Adaptec scsi controller that uses aic7xxx?

Actually, I got around it by removing scsi support from my kernel, because I don't have any scsi devices. I would have come back and posted that, but we've been having major trouble with our network, so my internet has been down for a couple of days. Thanks for your help.

you will need scsi support if you have a burner, just a FYI

Hmmm. That could be a problem. For the moment it's not a big deal since I switched to Mandrake because the gentoo install was just too involved for me right now. I'll probably try again later, so I'll have to keep that in mind. Thanks.

its not a big deal to add in, just needs to be in the kernel during install, or recompiled in afterwords, then just add a line to your bootloader and add the module to your modules.autoload.d
