if i were to get rid of a few of those virtual terminal things i get when i press alt+F# would it free a significant amount of resources? i have six of them, i'd really like to only have two...is there any way to get rid of the extras? and would it be advisable?

I don't think they use that much memory, but if you have limited memory, then it may help. Shouldn't hurt.

They are in /etc/inittab

# Run gettys in standard runlevels
1:12345:respawn:/sbin/getty tty1 VC linux
2:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty tty2 VC linux
3:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty tty3 VC linux
4:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty tty4 VC linux
5:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty tty5 VC linux
6:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty tty6 VC linux

Try commenting out the 6th and try that first.
