I have tried using a range of newsreaders on Slack 9.0 (Pan, KNode, Mozilla) and am still unable to post anything to newsgroups. I can read news just fine but given the range of readers I have attempted to use to post the one commonality is my system.
I can send and receive email just fine, so my email settings are fine. I am using a standalone box behind an iptables firewall using dial-up. My ISP assures me that their settings are fine and I have used their info to set up each of the readers but still to no avail.
I am not even sure where to begin to hunt down info on this, so am asking for some clues or suggestions as to where to begin to resolve this.
TIA
- Andy

If you tried several news readers and still can't post, it's probably not the software. Since you can read news fine, you are able to connect to the news server, so that's not the problem.

Most news servers these days require some type of authentication. This may be as simple as connecting from an IP address within a range acceptable to the server, or may require a username/password. Not having this right may be putting you in read only mode. What is the authentication method used there?

It would be helpful if you could provide more information, such as the actual error messages the news readers generate when you post and it fails.

Your ISP might be able to look in their logs too, but rule out problems on your end first.

If all else fails, you can always telnet into the news server on port 119, speak nntp to it, and try to post by hand this way. You'll get a full view of server issed error messages this way.
