Hi guys

Don't know what the heck happened. Haven't booted my Linux drive in a few days (it is separate from my Windoz and I switch by moving the ribbon).

Anyway, when last I checked I had a problem getting my KDE up, actually just finding the KDE as an option. Seems like it was lost during an upgrade at 3:am. So I downloaded the whole thing off of the net. The latest config KDE, at least from what I could tell off of the Drake auto update ftp server.

Today I hooked up and tried to boot into my Linux drive and I get something really weird.

It goes through the normal boot process as far as the boot loader asks what I want to boot into (Linux, Linuxfb, old Linux, failsafe). When I try to go into any of the the options it continues to boot as if everything is ok, but then it quits at xinetd load and kicks me out to a dafault login window.

This is what I get:

MandrakeLinux

adm
bin
daemon
games
gdm
halt
k (a user)
lp
mail
m (a user)
news
nobody
operator
root
rpc
rpm
shutdown
sync
uucp
vcsa
xfs

Then I have two buttons: "Reboot" and "Halt"

I then choose root or my user name "m" and it takes me to the next window

MandrakeLinux

root

Password:

Session Type:

with a drop down menu of either "default" or "failsafe"

Then two buttons: "Back" and "Login"

So I try to log in as either root or my user name and nothing. It does the shimmy thing and nothing. It wont recognize any of my user name's passwords nor the root password.

Any ideas? I did a google search but it's hard to find a match for this problem as it's kind of hard to explain. Basically because I'm not versed in what is actually goin on during the boot process.

I'm reading the troublshooting tips from the Drake Reference Guide, and I also tried to use the install disk as a rescue disk, all were no help.

No I didn't create a boot disk or a rescue disk. Shame on me and now I know better, believe me I will in the future.

Can anyone point me in a direction or am I just going to have to reinstall my Drake 9.1?

Thanks in advance you guys.

What happend when you tried to boot into rescue mode? did it try to mount any partitions. do you get any errors while the kernel is booting?

While in rescue mode I just had it reinstall the boot loader, if that makes sense. Afterward it goes about the same boot sequence and still kicks me out after or during the "xinetd" load. The status/progress bar on the gui never makes it to the end. It gets about 3/4 of the way and then it kicks me out to that other login window. Which incidentally, I hadn't encountered before.

Seems like Drake has got a bunch of different login windows.

It seems to go about the mounting process without any errors. I see it bringing up the ethernet and the drives and the sound and several other things. It goes by kind of quickly. That's why I'm giving the 3/4 of the way reference. I imagine most boot sequences are the same for Drake. Sorry I can't be too detailed, but like I said I'm new to it. I can tell a little about what's going on but I'm not 100% yet.

Can you login and then disable xinetd from starting?

Use the comandline service config utility. Something like chkconfig <service> off

Mandrake should have documentation on their on disabling/enabling services via the commandline.

I can't log in at all. The only thing that seems to work at start up is the boot loader. Then it kicks me out to some default login screen. Where it gives me the files above. Then I click on either my user or root and it moves me forward to a default login screen but it does the shimmy thing when I enter the passwords for user or root. It doesn't want to let me in.

I think I'm going to take the Chicken $#|T way and just reinstall.

I did this a bunch of times when I was first learning Windoz 98. It helped me to figure out what I was doing to screw up my OS.

This time I think I just need to be aware of the files that I'm updating and ensure that I don't delete something by mistake. Oh yeah, create a rescue/boot floppy.

Thanks you guys for all of your help.

Take care
