Hi, all!

I am running RH9.

I tried to install the new Gnome desktop from source and I didn't pass any arguments to configure, so it started installing in default locations. About half way through I started getting too many error messages, so I changed my mind and stopped.

The next time I rebooted my system and tried to log into Gnome, it tried to load the incomplete new gnome version (unsuccessfully of course).

How do I get it to go back to the old version (which seems to still exist, because it kept on working all the way through the compilation/installation and even worked after a restart of the X-server, but not anymore after rebooting the entire system)?

Is there some config file I can tweak which tells X where to look for Gnome, or something like that?

By the way, KDE still works fine, so it's not like my whole X-server is screwed up.

I already tried putting in the RH9 Cds and "upgrading" all of X, but to no avail.

Any ideas?

It's probably overwritten chunks of the original gnome install (although it may be using a gnome2 directory).

Check to see if it has changed the settings for when you start X - it may just be that you can change them back to point at gnome 1.

Otherwise, uninstalling and reinstalling the RPM from your CDs should (hopefully) do the trick.

Well, when I'm at the graphical login (after I start X) there is only one option for Gnome rather than one for the new and one for the old.

I'm actually letting garnome try installing Gnome 2.4 as we speak: if that goes through, I assume it would also solve my problems.

But if that doesn't work I'll try manaully reinstalling the RPMs from CD and hopefully that'll work.

Thanks! Let you know how it goes.
