I have a win 95 / FAT 32 partition with nothing on it.
Is there a simple way of turning it into a linux partition.

Try Partition Manager 2000 (it runs in windows)

i myself just did a RH7 install last night. first linux install. went quite well actually.
i used partition magic pro 6 to resize one of my partitions. then i created a logical linux partition on that one. it took along time to do this (about an hour). started with c and d (20/10) now it is 14/10 then just shy of 5 for RH7.

or use partition commander
don' use fdisk.. i am serious don' use it..use the partition manager of the distro only if you have to put just linux on the system..

I reccomend fdisk (in linux) its easy as hell

These NHF's are *easy* reading, I'd check em out (actually, I did like two days ago ;o)

creating filesystems in Linux:

using fdisk in Linux:

and if you're brave, try setting up a multi-partitioned system:
http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/installation/partition/multi_partition.html

and if you're not entirely clear on what a filesystem is:
