hi
i'm running mandrake 8 & i have the following services & dameons startung on boot:
alsa
anacron
atd
crond
cups
harddrake
keytable
kheader
kudzu
linuxconf
lvs
medusa-init
netfs
network
numlock
oki4daemon
postfix
random
rawdevices
sound
syslog
usb
webmin
xfs

i was wondering if i could disable any of these because i have no idea what they do (most of them) to free resources & possibly speed up boot time...for instance, could i disable harddrake if i didn't want autodetection of hardware on boot & then if i installed hardware, just run harddrake at the prompt after the bootup? thanks

Yup. You can disable a bunch of them. Head to this website to learn about which ones you should leave around and which ones you can shut down.
